Certainly, this reader would not be able to sit an end-of-term exam on these issues. As Chang admits near the end, “We have covered many topics, and I don’t expect my readers to remember all – or even most – of them”. I’m not sure that ‘guide’ is the best term, though, the coverage is more descriptive than diagnostic, more like a manual. However at some 460 pages is quite a detailed – if entertaining - explanation of economic history, concepts, and jargon, covering nine economic theories, with their strengths and weaknesses. The author has the laudable aim of making economics accessible to the "broadest possible audience". Ha-Joon Chang teaches economics at Cambridge and his book reads like (and perhaps originally was) an introductory undergraduate course. ![]()
